There's no such thing as AI lead generation
AI lead generation is being sold as a quick fix to every business's biggest problem. But even with AI, there are no quick fixes. Too many businesses are learning this the hard way.
Lead generation is still hard. It's still worth doing. And AI can help. But it can't do it for you.
How do I know? Because in the two weeks since I launched The AI Edit's lead generation strategy offering, I have generated nine new leads. Two of those came from companies that were sold an AI lead generation system, implemented it, failed, and are now pretty peeved. They've wasted money, lost time, and damaged their brand. They signed off on something that spammed thousands of prospects with LinkedIn and email sequences that made no difference.
So if there's no such thing as AI lead generation, what does work?
Lead generation done by AI-fluent businesses is what works.
AI hasn't changed the fundamentals of lead generation
B2B lead generation has always come down to five things. Figuring out who needs what you sell. Finding a way to reach them. Saying something they care about. Qualifying who's serious. Converting who's ready.
After 20+ years and over 2 million leads generated, those five things haven't moved. Channels have shifted. Tactics have come and gone. The fundamentals have been remarkably stable.
Most of what's marketed as AI lead generation focuses on the technology layer and ignores everything underneath it. Which is why it doesn't work for businesses that haven't built the strategy first.
What changes when you're AI fluent
AI fluency is not the same as using AI tools. Plenty of businesses have ChatGPT subscriptions and zero AI fluency. Fluency means knowing what AI changes about each part of the lead generation process. Research that took weeks now takes hours. Personalisation that needed a team can be done by one person. Content production has accelerated by a factor most leaders haven't yet absorbed.
That's what fluency adds. Speed and scale, applied to strategy that already works.
It also adds judgement. AI-fluent leaders can spot, in minutes, whether a new tool or service is going to work for their business or waste their money. The two peeved companies I mentioned earlier didn't have that judgement when they signed the contract.
The catch is the obvious one. Speed without strategy doesn't generate meaningful leads. It damages brands at scale, faster than was possible before AI. That's not progress.
This is why we treat AI Fluency for Leaders as the foundation for any lead gen strategy.
The AI Edit Method for B2B lead gen
The AI Edit Method is an AI-enabled lead generation framework. It runs a defined sequence of stages, end to end, and then keeps running. The final stages are continuous experimentation and regular review, which means the work doesn't stop at launch.
The eight stages are: Landscape, Audit, Blueprint, Ammunition, Channels, Rollout, Experiments, Review.
Each stage does what it sounds like. Landscape sets the market and competitive picture. Audit examines what's already in place. Blueprint defines the strategy. Ammunition builds the assets. Channels selects where to deploy them. Rollout puts everything live. Experiments runs the tests that improve performance. Review keeps the engine honest.
The benefit is that it's a system. It covers every base and improves over time, instead of jumping on the latest trend and hoping it works.
It also takes advantage of how channels reinforce each other. PR feeds SEO. SEO feeds AEO. Content fuels everything. A method that coordinates them delivers what single-channel tactics never can. That makes the whole engine more resilient: if one channel stops working, you've got time to fix it without panic stations.
And it builds your brand at the same time. The stronger the brand gets, the easier every other lead gen activity becomes. Search rankings improve. Outreach gets answered. Referrals start arriving on their own. Which means you're not scrambling after competitors. You're confident in a method that's strategic and comprehensive.
Implemented properly, the AI Edit Method is hard to break. The method is built around feedback. Every stage produces signal. Every experiment refines the next one. Your lead gen strategy gets stronger every quarter, not weaker. That's the opposite of what most businesses experience, where what worked last year doesn't this year and nobody quite knows why.
It uses AI where AI adds value. It doesn't depend on AI, because AI can't be depended on.
Who this works for
The principles of the AI Edit Method apply universally. The method itself is designed for higher-ticket B2B service businesses, where considered strategy outperforms volume tactics.
Leaders who already accept that AI is in their business whether they like it or not, and want to apply it in a way that makes commercial sense. Not people looking for a magic button.
Not a fit for businesses still hanging their hopes on one tool, one campaign or one tactic to fix everything. That's a mindset problem, and it's one of the biggest things that breaks a lead gen strategy.
How to apply the AI Edit Method
Three ways, depending on how much support you want.
Implement it yourself by joining the AI Growth Community. £50 a month for access to the resources, frameworks and live calls that walk you through the method.
Implement it as part of a cohort by joining the B2B Lead Accelerator. Live sessions, one-to-one support, a small group of non-competing businesses, and the dashboards and systems set up and maintained for you. £950 a month, continuous.
Or have us do it with you. B2B lead gen consulting is an ongoing engagement covering strategy, systems, content, PR, SEO, LLMO, inbound and outbound, built around the eight-stage method.
FAQ
What is AI lead generation and how does it work?
AI lead generation is the term used to describe lead gen activities done with AI tools. It isn't a new discipline. It works only when traditional lead generation strategy is already in place underneath the technology. Without that, AI accelerates ineffective tactics rather than fixing them.
How can AI improve B2B lead generation strategies?
AI compresses the time it takes to research markets, build assets, personalise outreach and analyse results. It improves execution speed and scale. It does not replace strategy. Businesses with strong strategy benefit most. Businesses without it tend to waste the speed.
What are the typical ROI figures for AI lead generation?
There aren't reliable industry-wide figures, because outcomes depend almost entirely on the strategy AI is layered onto. Strong strategy plus AI fluency produces compounding ROI. Weak strategy plus AI tools produces faster failure. The technology rarely changes the maths on its own.
Who is the AI Edit Method for?
Leaders of higher-ticket B2B service businesses who want a structured approach to lead generation in an AI-shaped market. It suits businesses with the time and judgement to apply a method, not the patience to keep trialling tools.
